Conspiracy Files

June 17th 2006 08:36
For good value, there's nothing more entertaining on this planet than conspiracy theories. So when I picked up this book for about $7 I was thrilled. Thrilled and amused. Thriled, amused and knocked out even! There's something about that mix of paranoia and the extraordinary that really hits on a certain nerve... I love it.
Conspiracy Files
Conspiracy Files, by David Southwell & Sean Twist

This is a slightly tongue-in-cheek guide to the what's what of the conspiracy world. Every conspiracy is broken down into a rundown of what happened, what was strange about it, who might've perpetrated it (including a list of the normal suspects, and then some more left-of-field suspects), the most convincing evidence that supports the theory, the most mysterious fact, and then to cap it off - what sceptics say to debunk the theory. It's pretty even-handed when it comes to these elaborate and mind-boggling theories... it even pokes fun at some of the stranger theories.

Here are some great conspiracy theories as detailed by this book...

- The Nazis of World War II still exist today. They all emigrated to Antarctica (Neu Schwabenland to them) to form a new Nazi state in 1945 and fought off a 10 000-man American force in 1947.
- Some Nazis escaped their comeuppance at the end of World War II by using rocket ships to go to the moon, where they set up secret bases and still reside today.
- Iron Butterfly bassist Philip Taylor Kramer (who was also a mathematical genius involved in the development of nuclear missle technology for the U.S. government) was bumped off after formulating a way to instantaneously teleport matter.

- The Nazis were a front for a cult of Tibetan monks known as 'The Yellow Hats', who sought world domination.
- Hillary Clinton's marriage to Bill Clinton is a sham. She is really the leader of a lesbian fascist group known as 'The Sisterhood' who plan to install a matriarchal dictatorship in America.
- Barcodes are really the work of Satan, who seeks to mark all under his dominion.

Hilariously, some right-wing Christian groups in America actually believe that last one. As far as neccessary evils go, I guess it's right up there with zippers!

Amongst all the fun, there are some pretty valid points raised. Almost each and every conspiracy theory listed in this book has at least one questionable fact at it's core and if this book only sets out to make you question the truth we are given then I guess it succeeds and is right to flaunt some of these entertaining if ridiculous theories. It also details all the major and minor conspiracies of today... JFK, 9/11, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Paul is Dead, Men in Black, Gulf War Syndrome, etc, etc, so there's something for everyone.

Elvis and Nixon
Elvis wanted to join the CIA. Was he successful?

'Conspiracy Files' at Amazon.com - you can order this book here. If you're not keen on internet purchases, keep your eyes open at various bargain bookstores - it's A4 sized, hardcover and cheap.

As one of the authors ... what can I say but thank you.
