Dymocks - 100 Books You've Never Read

February 8th 2007 07:36

Dymocks, one of Australia's biggest branches of booksellers, have a current promotion of '3 for 2' (three books for the price of two) on their '100 Books You've Never Read' list. Note it's not '100 Best Books You've Never Read'... it's kind of just an arbitary 100, not exactly a Top 100, though a great deal of the titles are or have been fairly popular with readers. Anyway, there are some interesting titles in the list, a lot of contemporary books and recent releases too, and (unlike Angus & Robertson's Top 100) they're not in any order and are assumedly just chosen by the company's marketing department...

I've only read sixteen of them. A lot of them are books I'd like to read though.

44 of the titles can also be found on the Angus and Robertson Top 100, so I guess (according to the big companies) there are only so many books out there worth reading...

What an odd list. I would guess that just about everyone would have read at least a couple of those.

I also find it odd why Dymocks should say, "...never read" when many are either classics or popular book sellers.

I've read 37 from the list and I have to say some were great, most were moderate, some were crap. I guess that's what you will always get with a "Top 100".

At least there is no Dan Brown in there!

I think Dan Brown's had his day... anyone who was ever interested in him enough to read more than one book has probably read all his books by now. His new book was meant to be out ages ago.

Hi Luke,

Impressive list, I think I've read a few, or more ... but not all ... yet!

Here in Q. there is a book chain called Borders. They have these enormous bookshops in the malls with Gloria Jeans coffee shops inside them.

You can sip your latte and are encouraged to read the books whilst you do. The atmosphere is brilliant and quieter than in the main part of the mall.

I can think of nothing better to do when waiting for a movie than to go a bit early, and grab a Chai and one of these titles, next time I’m there…

Thanks for the heads up and titles list.

Cheers

Yeah we have borders in N.S.W. too
They're an American superstore chain... they've got a pretty good range.

I've read 32 of them. Also wonder why they put in so many classics/best sellers that most people who read would have read?

Wish I'd read this when the sale was on but it was before my (Orble) time. Love book sales. Always buy a ton when I go to DFO!

Yeah I dunno why there's so many bigger books in there, they probably tend to do that because they already have the stock or can get the stock, as opposed to truly lesser known books which would take a bit longer to source.

What's DFO?

Direct Factory Outlets. We have a couple in Melbourne but you aren't Melb are you?

A lot of big brands have stores there where they sell samples and seconds or last season stuff, or just excess stock.

They have Cue, Aquila, Charlie Brown, Billabong... heaps of things, plus a pretty big book store.

ah okay
nah, I'm Western Sydney
there are some bookstores along those lines up... QBD is one, also there's one near Central Station and Angus & Robertson had temp stores set up that act as DFO-equivelents..
