January 10th 2007 11:49
Just a quick round-up of the Kid's Top 50 at Angus & Robertson today... this list is pretty much an indication of the biggest-selling 'kids' books, and I think it's a pretty fair summation of some decent books.

1. Harry Potter (all six books) by J. K. Rowling
There's a few odd books in there... I wouldn't really call 'Pride and Prejudice' a kid's book, any kid who chooses to read it leads a very drab life indeed! Ha ha, just kidding (maybe). Likewise, 'Lord of the Rings' is pretty dense reading for someone classed as a 'kid'... 'The Hobbit' might be a children's book, but 'Lord of the Rings' most certainly isn't. If it was, then why do stock it in the Adult's Fantasy section of the bookstore rather than the children's section? Why include it in the Children's Top 50 if you don't even put it in that section normally? Likewise for 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and 'Pride and Prejudice' ... it just doesn't make sense. Sorry, just a pet peeve.
Oh, and while I'm on pet peeves about this list... why count all the Harry Potter books as just 1 book if you're going to count Andy Griffiths' various 'Just...' books seperately? Maybe I should take back my 'fair summation' call from the opening paragraph... don't mind me, I'm just tired and grouchy.

I agree that some arent really "kid's books". Do they base this list on how many children come in a buy a book or what?
In other news, its cool to see that Roald Dahl is still going strong.. he was by far my fav author when I was a kid!
