The Lovely Bones - The Film

Spiralling into reality is the forthcoming film adaptation of Alice Sebold's popular literature book 'The Lovely Bones'. Angus and Robertson currently rank it within their Top 10 books (alongside 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Memoirs of a Geisha'), so it's no small fry in the literary world. And who will be helming this adaptation? Well, it's none other than Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson.
Jackson is obviously looking to pick up some cred on this one, following on from such big budget extravangzas as 'Lord of the Rings' and 'King Kong'. He's not taking the project lightly though, he and his wife, Fran Walsh, have been working on the screenplay for the film for at least three years now. It must be nearing completion though as the film is set for release sometime this year, probably around December to ensure it's eligibility for Oscar season.
Lord of hobbits, apes and b-grade horror he may be, but Jackson isn't completely unsuited to making such a film. Back in 1993 he made the independent film, 'Heavenly Creatures', a twisted true tale of murder and obsession in small town New Zealand, and it's actually quite a good movie too. It'll be interesting to see how he handles 'The Lovely Bones', a similar project, now that he's the post-Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson.
'Lovely Bones' was first slated for adaptation in 2003. Lynne Ramsay, a Scottish filmmaker who directed 'Morvern Callar', was set to direct but this attempt pretty much fell apart when the production company, Film Four, underwent huge budget cuts to avoid bankruptcy. After this it was rumoured that Steven Spielberg would film it but the rights eventually passed into the hands of Jackson.
Peter Jackson's adaptation of the film will most likely feature location shooting in both New Zealand and Pennsylvania. Casting is yet to be decided.
