Book Club - by Suhaili

If everyone has one good book in them, what would yours be?

November 10th 2006 11:24
They say that everyone has one good book in them. Ever since I knew about stuff, I knew I wanted to be a writer. With this in mind, I hope I have more than one more book in me. There's a chance I don't though, I've been working on one book now for five years.

Harper Lee only had one book in her... and what a book! 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is one of the most-loved and critically-acclaimed books of the twentieth century.

Likewise, Truman Capote might as well have had only one good book in him (or two)... after he wrote his second book, 'In Cold Blood', it took so much out of him that he was unable to ever complete another book.

J. D. Salinger's only full-length novel was 'Catcher in the Rye'.

Joseph Heller was unable to ever match the heights scaled by his masterpiece 'Catch 22'.

Arundhati Roy won the Booker Prize for 'The God of Small Things' and has never even attempted a second novel.

Maybe the pressure is just too much?
Or maybe these people genuinely just had one good story inside of them that needed to get out.
Does this mean that joe bloggs the gutter cleaner has an amazing piece of literature inside of him screaming to get out? Could some of the best books never written be walking around your home town?

Even if you're not a writer and don't have aspirations to be, what would your one story be?

Hmmm. something with twists and turns that goes crazy at the end with something way out there... or something. I remember writing a short story in English one day where you had to include certain items and it was a good story about a mass murderer and it had crazy twists and yeah... The teacher said it was good and wanted to enter it in something... Maybe that was it for me.
Maybe a childrens book later.... about a chicken.

Do you still have this story?

Hmmm... no I think I threw out all my school stuff... I was thnking about that when I wrote the comment. I remember it was about an old little lady and she lived in a rural community and had a shed out the back which ended up being full of dead bodies...

I think you should write it again.

But I'm not very good at it... plus I will never recapture the same flavour coz I'm not sitting in a classroom with a time limit while people are making weird noises while writing...
How bout you write it? I think the things that had to be in it were a squeeky floorboard, a piece of rope... and other stuff? I can't remember.

Maybe we could recreate the environment for you? We'll get some seats and tables and we all pretend we're taking a test and we'll put the clock in your line of vision and we'll make strange noises while you try and concentrate.

Sounds like a plan!

I don't think I fit into my old school uniform though...

and have to get the teacher.... Mrs Druhan, and I was quite possibly sitting next to Nicole when doing it too...

I think it would be a good social experiment and excellent waste of an hour.

Indeed.

Maybe we could all write something if we did it. Have an hour quiet writing... has to have certain things in it and stuff... hmmmm

hahaha, I can't see everyone agreeing to sit down and pretend they were back in school for an hour.

why not? they need to open up to new experiences. I could say that I need to do it for an assignement at uni.. about teaching something?

back on topic
How much have you written of your "One Book"?

I've written about half, first draft only. It's slow going... I haven't really had any time to work on it for ages though.

Im not very good at giving opinions though... and I sort of blank out after I read or watch anything and forget what it was about for an hour or two.

Is it very big yet? Designed a cover? A name?

Comment by Luke

November 12th 2006 09:51
It's not very big, it'd be quite a short novel when it's finished (if it's ever finished)

no cover designed yet

it's called Pen-Forth
it's about super powers and viking myths and dole bludgers

Sounds like an interesting mix... understand now why the cover isnt designed yet - so many things to draw!

Is there any naked women in it?

Comment by Luke

Nah.
but don't worry, it's still pretty low-brow.

I wonder if the authors who only write one book, like the ones listed above actually run out of ideas, or just decide that after that one they have enough money and couldnt be bothered putting the effort in to write again...

dunno hey... I think it might be a bit of both. I think for an author like Harper Lee or Arundhati Roy it's a case of not having enough money but having enough critical praise. When a book is as well excepted as 'To Kill a Mockingbird' it would be pretty hard to imagine topping it or equaling it I think.

yeah there would be that too.. fearing that your next work may give your good work a bad name if you produced a dud.

I guess being accepted and praised as a good author is better than money for some... just all your hard work being acknowledged by the world. Then you just go and do some signings and your set.

I saw a signing going on in Dymocks Penrith Westfields the other day - the two miners were signing their book... when I saw the sign I thought.. Miners? who now? Ohhhh, those guys...

oh man - I missed it? I wanted to go down and get them to sign a shovel hahahahaha.

maybe a flashlight?

I think they'd probably get a little bit upset but then I'd say 'Hey dude, MINE your own business' LOLz

Oh dear... the jokes would have been bad for them for a long time...

i just think its funny how they completely stuffed up there chances in America by being amazingly boring...

Comment by Luke

November 12th 2006 10:24
what happened? I didn't hear about that.

Comment by Keira

November 12th 2006 10:30
well, they and their wives were flown over to America for free by some tv station, as they were pretty interested about their story. They filmed an interview with them, and then decided not to show it because the boys were like mumbling and the stoory was boring. They had obviously had no media training and it just sucked. so, because they never aired the interview, they never got their big break into America.

good... maybe they should go back to mining. Their fifteen minutes are over!

Comment by Keira

November 12th 2006 10:41
The fact that their fifteen minutes was mostly comprised of us not knowing they were alive and not really having to listen to them.... They got out and the hype faded... we actually had to listen to them then.

What was the topic for this post again....?

Thats right!

I think the only book I've read that you mentioned up there is to Kill a Mocking bird.. but I have no recollection of it... I think I had to read it for english and we started to watch the movie (is it in Black and White?).

I remember our teacher in year 12 telling us that Catcher in the Rye and Catch 22 were good and Ive never gotten round to finding them and making the effort.

Comment by Luke

November 12th 2006 10:46
yeah it's in black and white, the movie is really good too. I've got it if you ever want to watch it.

Catcher in the Rye rules. Catch 22 is fantastic too (so fantastic that Bernie Lomax Five where named Yossarian Lives! for about a year after one of the characters in the book)

PS. I think I just heard the gate get blown over again.

Damn gate....

Is the badn due for a name change with the change of band members? Have you done a Bernie interview in the Australian Music blog?

I think I just have to work through and borrow everything of your to watch and read otherwise I may be banned from the Earth.

Comment by Luke

November 12th 2006 11:02
No, I think BL5 is here to stay. It's too hard to think of band names... just ask Mediatramp!

I can't interview myself!

I think it will take you some time to work through all my stuff, but you're welcome to try!

Why would you get banned from the Earth though?

Comment by Keira

November 12th 2006 11:05
Yeah thinking of new band names is annoying.. people cant all agree.

You CAN interview Bernie... or you know, you aren't the only member! Hahaha!

I will get banned form the Earth because I dont get any of the in jokes and have superior knowledge like you Luke. You are my hero.

Comment by Luke

November 12th 2006 11:10
Wha....!

I don't have superior knowledge... I'm sure there's heaps of stuff you know that I don't. You have to remember that I have had a lot of time on my hands to waste on books and films in the last decade. I've been on the dole twice you know.
