O'Brian is most well known for his series of historical, sea-faring Napoleonic books featuring the characters of Captain Jack Aubrey and Doctor Maturin.There are twenty books in total in this series, plus one unfinished book that O'Brian was working on at the time of his death. The tenth of these books was turned into the 2004 film 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World', directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe.
O'Brian published his first book when he was just fourteen and followed this up with six other historical-adventure and teen-aimed books before starting on the Aubrey-Maturin books. His books are well renowned for their accurate historical details and the heavy research that went into them.

Shame about the film of Master and Commander, really didnt capture the essence of the books sadly.
