Perfume film trailer
January 17th 2007 10:32
Another month, another widely-loved book adapted for the screen. I hate to be so relentlessly cynical about these things, but I really can't see a film of 'Perfume' doing the book any justice. It's not really a very visual book (if that makes sense?), it's a lot of internal stuff about smells and stuff like that. I won't pass judgement too strongly, it's directed by the guy who did 'Run, Lola Run', which was a very fun and inventive film, so maybe he has some tricks up his sleeve in regards to how he has brought this classic novel to celluloid.
The trailer seems okay... I'm curious as to how it would look to someone unfamiliar with the book. Did it get your attention? Is it something you would watch? Or does it seem silly? I can imagine it seeming silly... endless talk of olfactory pleasure might work on the page, but watching a 140 minute film about it might wear thin on one's ability to suspend laughter.
Also, the character Grenouille is described in the book as being very ugly... Ben Whishaw doesn't really seem all that ugly to me. His voice seemed spot on to the way I imagined it in the book, but I'm not really sure if it's really his voice or has been dubbed for the English version of the film - it's a European production and I'm not sure what language it has been filmed in. Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman turn up in the trailer too, but the rest of the cast is mostly French.
Anyway, thought I'd put up a link to the trailer. It's telling that this film has been released now, the Oscars are just around the corner... could they be fishing for an Academy Award or two?
