Autumnal American author Sidney Sheldon has passed away just 10 days shy of his 90th birthday. Born Sidney Schechtel and starting out as a playwright in the 1930s, he managed to distinguish himself through his work for the theatre, film and television. Around the age of 50 he turned his hand to novels, mostly of a thriller nature, and became a bestseller. It is for his work as a novelist that he is probably best remembered.
In 1948 Sheldon won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, for the film 'The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer' (starring Cary Grant and Shirley Temple). In the 50s he won a Tony Award for the musical, 'Redhead'. In the 60s he produced and wrote 'The Patty Duke Show', and created and produced 'I Dream of Jeannie', for which he won an Emmy. He also wrote for various other television shows during this era, including 'Hart to Hart'.
In 1969, he wrote his first novel, 'The Naked Face', which did quite well critically - winning the Edgar Allen Poe Award (a mystery fiction award). His following book, 'The Other Side of Midnight, published in 1973, was a Number 1 bestseller.
From the 80s onwards Sheldon mainly concentrated on writing novels. His last work was 'The Other Side of Me', an autobiography published in 2005.
