Book Club - by Suhaili

Fantasy and Science-Fiction resources

October 12th 2006 12:10
Was doing a bit of trawling across the web today... looking at a bit of this, and a bit of that, and ended up collecting together a fair bit of sci-fi and fantasy sites (often under the more open-ended name of 'speculative fiction' - a good title as far as grouping the genres together goes, but I doubt it will ever take off from a marketing perspective).

Anyway, here's some sites I found...

Gaslight Books - a specialty bookshop in Canberra that focuses on crime and detective fiction, as well as sci-fi, fantasy and horror.

Galaxy Bookshop - Sydney's premier sci-fi and fantasy bookstore.
Infinitas - Parramatta-based sci-fi and fantasy bookstore.
Fantastic Fiction - a good database of popular authors, good sci-fi, fantasy and crime author information. This database is especially good for determining what order the books of a particular should be read in, and for finding more obscure authors by well-known authors (for instance, did you know that Dan Brown had a humour book published well before his other novels under the name Danielle Brown?).
Voyager Online - The fantasy/sci fi arm of HarperCollins publishers.
Of Science and Swords - Melbourne-based sci-fi/fantasy bookstore.
Slow Glass - Melbourne-based mailorder, "Australia's largest science fiction, fantasy and horror mail order bookstore".

MirrorDanse Books - independent Australian publishers of fantasy and sci-fi.
Agog Press - independent Australian publishers of fantasy and sci-fi.
Aussie Reviews - reviews of Australian books.
Sci Fi Revu - Reviews of sci-fi and fantasy books.
Ticonderoga Publications - independent Australian publishers of fantasy and sci-fi.
Emereld City - now defunct sci-fi and fantasy zine.
The Specusphere - magazine and resource directory for sci-fi and fantasy.
Sci-Fi Crow's Nest - sci-fi and fantasy magazine.
Australian Speculative Fiction - pretty self-explanatory.
Locus Online - website for Locus magazine (yep, you guessed it - sci-fi and fantasy).

Hey how's it going? I'm just checking out all the sites here on Orble, because I just got a domain blog and I want to see what other people are all writing about.

I love ficition!! I was just going to ask you if you've ever heard of a author by the name of Tim Dorsey? He's my favorite, but not a lot of people know of him.

Aaron.

Lol speculative fiction. Fantasy's my fav genre in books (not so much sci-fi, though... Not really into futuristic books). Thanks for sharing those sites!

I like a lot 'children's' fantasy, like Philip Pullman, Philip Reeve, Jonathan Stroud, D.M. Cornish, etc. I think a lot of stuff that gets marketed that way is too underrated by most adults.
