The Man Booker Prize - The Complete List of Winners

November 19th 2006 11:40

The Man Booker is among the most coveted and prestigous of book awards. Anyone within the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland is eligible for nomination (as long they currently live within these countries, it doesn't even matter if they were born outside the Commonwealth), provided they have written a full-length novel in the English language that is not self-published.

Last year a Man Booker International Prize was started, for which any person of any nationality can qualify. Originally called the Booker-McConnell Prize when it began in 1968, it went on to become known as simply the Booker prize, before switching to the Man Booker prize in more recent years.

2005 "The Sea" by John Banville (Ireland)
2006 "The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai (India)

I've read only four of them. I guess I have a fair while to go before I can claim any good knowledge of Booker Prize winners. As it stands, only Peter Carey and J. M. Coetzee have won more than once. The majority of the winners are English, but I suppose that's to be expected if the competition is based there.

nah, I've read Life of Pi, Vernon God Little, Disgrace and God of Small Things. Some of the others look good, some of them don't.

I thought Life of Pi was overrated.

The Blind Assassin is pretty damn good, though. Crazy-ass plot!

I remember you saying that a while back

And I remember going 'No Way!' ahahahaha.

A friend of mine read The Blind Assassin and he told me it was boring so I've been a bit put off.
