Tintin to made into a film by Steven Spielberg!
March 11th 2007 07:29
This is only marginally book-related (comics), but I love Tintin so much that I think I'll put this piece of news up here anywhere.
It looks like Steven Spielberg is finally making a live-action Tintin film. I remember reading a couple of years ago that he currently owned the rights but wasn't intending to do anything with them yet... but, well, it looks like the time has come!
For anyone who's been away for the last 80 years, Tintin is a world famous Belgian comic by gifted artist and storyteller, Herge. The comics detail the adventures of a morally-upstanding boy-journalist who travels all over the world with his dog, Snowy. The stories are a mix of political satire and heart-stopping adventure with a big wallop of old-fashioned derring do and a great cast of supporting characters.
It should be noted that Spielberg might just be acting as producer, it's his company, Dreamworks, that will be making the film - a director is yet to be announced. I don't think Spielberg will direct himself as he tends to only make HUGE movies these days and I can't really see a Tintin film being a blockbuster along the lines of War of the Worlds. Here's hoping Spielberg doesn't cast Tom Hanks as Tintin either!
The good news is that Herge Studios (set up back in 1950 to help the author of Tintin put his comic serials together) is involved and has already started pre-production. The film is scheduled for release in 2009. It's yet to be decided or announced which particular Tintin adventure will be adapted for film.
So... Tintin fans reading this... what Tintin adventure would you like to see on the big screen?
And who should play Tintin? Or (if the story is one that involves him) who should play Captain Haddock?
Personally, I'd love to see 'The Blue Lotus' but unfortunately I don't think it will happen because it's connected to another adventure, 'The Cigars of the Pharoahs'. Others I'd like to see include 'The Crab with the Golden Claws' and 'The Broken Ear'.
As for Tintin, if this was made ten years ago then I think Jude Law would've been good, but I have no idea who I'd cast now. Maybe Leonardo DiCaprio? He has that boyish look about him, and he's been proving himself to be a pretty great actor lately... maybe he's too old as well though.

I have no idea who should play who, but I love Tintin and all the books. If I wasn't so tired I would find a quote from the Captain that always has me in stitches, the way he combines words and phrases is astounding....and I love Snowy...but will Spielberg make it cheesy? Hmmmm....
I think one of my fave books was the one where they are in Nepal...can't remember the name at the moment....I'll be back again tomorrow...
