Where's Wally - The Great Picture Hunt
June 23rd 2006 13:17
After nine years in hiding (ho ho ho), the stripey four-eyed one makes a triumphant return to the world of Children's books with his 5th outing, 'The Great Picture Hunt'.
Apparently it took a good three years to put together and has all sorts of slap-band wizardry and fun-bang-do in it. Now, if you were a kid of the 80s or 90s (like me) you would know that Wally was the be-all and end-all of literary coolness. In primary school, when we were forcibly herded into the library once a week, everyone would run for the Where's Wally books. I kind of wish I was a kid again just so I could relive the magic with this latest adventure. Sigh.
Strangely, Wally is known as Waldo in America, Canada and a whole bunch of other countries, yet is known only as Wally in Australia and the UK. I don't know why we had to have him called Wally instead of Waldo, but I'm sure glad we did cause Waldo sounds like the name of a dickhead (no offence to any Waldo's reading this... incidentally, if there are any Waldos reading this - FOUND YOU!)
In the bizarre event of my last three paragraphs going completely over your head, Wally is a traveling dude in a red and white-striped jumper who ventures all over the world, time, Hollywood, etc, etc. Each page of his books has a big picture of a location filled with hundreds of people... your job is to spot Wally amongst them. Amazing fun, no matter what your age. As the books progressed, more characters were added - such as Wenda (Wally's missus), Odlaw (Wally's arch-enemy) and Wizard Whitebeard (an old Wizardy dude who Wally apparently reports to). The popularity of the books even led to a 13-episode cartoon series, which was great fun too.
Anyway, if you have kids or know some kids who need a fun present that doesn't involve pixels or rudimentary violence, I think this 'Where's Wally - The Great Picture Hunt' would be a great idea.
